A rare and excellent pair of Georgian meat domes.
Made circa 1820 of Old Sheffield plate these domes are in wonderful condition with virtually no wear, dents or copper bleeding. Both are heavy and have a feel of top quality about them.
They are both un-marked which is not unusual although one does bear some small initials G.D to the interior (makers mark?)
The removable cast handles are also in excellent condition (see photo) although one has had a replacement turn key.
The fabulous armorial crests are inset, as you would expect, in a patch of solid silver.
They bear the motto “SI JE PUIS” (If I can). (see photo)
Some research has led me to believe this is the crest of the Livingstone clan of Scotland. The “demi-savage” holding a club and a serpent is exact as is the motto. In this case the figure is rising from a crown and is flanked by two “demi -savages” with clubs. The family also had close links with New York and New Jersey.
The largest dome measures 19” in length by 13.75” across and approx 11” high. The smaller of the two measures 17.75” in length by 13” across and approx 11” high.
These really are a fantastic pair of domes with an interesting history.
