"In this 20th annual Hearst Gold Trophy Regatta, sponsored July 27 at the Long Beach (California) Marine Stadium by the Los Angeles Examiner, a fleet of 107 outboards in nine classes turned out, nine Western Divisional champions were crowned and eight drivers joined the "hell-diver club." At right, part of the 9,300 spectators who saw the regatta watch C-service hydroplanes cross the finish line on the second heat. Elgin Gates' Pearly Gates, Huntington Beach, California, was the winner over 11 other rivals in this class................................"
