Our Scottish District Checks by E S Harrison
4to, gold titling + device to the front board + spine. Very, very slight wear to the board edges, very, very slight wear to dustwrapper edges otherwise the book is in VG++ condition in a VG++ wrapper. Ffron free endpaper is inscribed 'Tweed Mills, Selkirk 13 Sept 1973' plus 4 seemingly related , but indecipherable, signatures. This beautifully illustrated book is the first to be devoted almost exclusively to the private cloth designs known as 'District Checks', to distinguish them from tartans. 'Almost', because there is also the first full account of the Balmoral Tartan, based on information kindly supplied by the Royal family. target="xml" content="namespace prefix = o ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" /">?> These designs, on which the author is the leading authority, are an integral part of our Scottish heritage. As Mr Harrison says, they are so closely linked with the social fabric of our land that they may well interest more people than just those who earn their livelihood in the woollen industry. In his introductory essay, Mr Harrison rambles in a delightfully inconsequential manner over the history of Scotland and in the course of doing this, shows how district checks originated. It only needs to be added that the illustrations are meticulously accurate and that many of them are taken from cloth samples woven under the supervision of Mr Harrison himself.
