The item being sold is a fine copy of the "Ballad of Reading Gaol" by the noted Irish Poet, Novelist, and Playwright, Oscar Wilde.  Wilde lived from 1854 to 1900 in Victorian England where he penned such noted works as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "The Picture of Dorian Gray." The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a famous poem written by Wilde after his release from Reading prison on May 19, 1897.  After a notorious trial, Wilde was found guilty of homosexual offenses in 1895 and sentenced to two years hard labor in prison and was transferred to Reading, Berkshire in November 1895.  During his imprisonment, a rare thing occurred: a hanging.  Trooper Charles Thomas Wooldridge was found guilty of killing his wife, and had been seen by Wilde many times during his imprisonment.  This hanging inspired in Wilde's mind an illustration of the fact that we are all malefactors, all in need of forgiveness. According to Wilde the greater the crime, the more necessary charity. His final vision of the world is not frivolity, but one of suffering.  Although Wilde never hid his authorship of the poem, it was published under the name 'C.3.3.', which stood for building C, floor 3, cell 3, at Reading. This ensured that Wilde's name (by then notorious) did not appear on the front cover.  This copy was published by Barse & Hopkins, and does not have a copyright. It is in very good condition with a pasted on illustration on the cover, a beautiful frontis portrait of Wilde, a highly decorated gold gilt Title Page, and is printed on a fine-grade of linen-like paper.  Wilde dedicated the book to CTW, the unfortunate fellow prisoner.  Thanks for Looking!
