One of the widest used plant products in the world, organic distilled witch hazel is a medicine cabinet essential. The common name refers to the occult powers attributed to these plants, whose hazel-like branches were used as divining rods for water and gold. Organic distilled witch hazel is an extract from the witch hazel shrub which the Native Americans were all too familiar with, especially the Mohawk. It has been used in old traditions as a natural astringent, toner, cleanser, and anti-inflammatory. It was adopted by settlers and listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia (1862-1916) and in the U.S. National Formulary (1916-55). The main constituents are bioflavonoids and tannins (medicinal chemicals - hamamelitannin and proanthocyanidins), though there is also a volatile oil and bitters. Externally the remedy is anti-inflammatory, soothing and cooling, and is very useful for any minor injury. It will ease bruises and swellings and will help staunch blood-flow from small wounds: it also allays the discomfort of varicose veins and haemorrhoids and so on.
