Introduction.

Hello and may I introduce this pre-owned, vintage rinestone costume clip.

I have collected and restored vintage costume jewellery for many years.

I find it sad that so many pieces are discarded as they are not made of precious materials. Especially in today's financial and economic climate.

My hobby has become my hospital and orphanage for unwanted vintage jewellery, such as this piece here.

Description.

This is what is known as a dress clip and is a fantastic versatile piece of jewellery.

Originally there would have been a pair of clips, or a duette as they were also called.

To be clipped onto belts, hats, gloves, bags, shoes, cuffs, collars, necklines and anything else you can think of.

The design was concieved by Cartier, who was inspired whilst watching a woman using clothes pegs to hang out her washing.

The clip measures 3.5cm long. Apart from a tiny bit of tarnishing, is in very good condition.

Background Information

Much more than today, costume jewellery of the past was made as replicas of actual gemstone pieces, worn to give the impression that the owner could afford to purchase the real article.

Therefore the better the copy of the gemstone the better the quality and the more expensive the piece was to buy.

The art Deco Era:-

The catastrophic events of the first world war had a fairly devastating effect on art and artistic design in general.

A sense of restlessness and change was quickly spreading through Europe and America.

It was inevitable that this would be articulated in new and daring artistic forms and shapes.

Another vitally important change was the sense of freedom and independence gained by women in society.

During the war women had worked alongside men, and for the first time ever had become the principle breadwinners whilst their husbands were away fighting at the front.
The values of life before the war, when helpless, fluttering ladies were adorned from head to foot in formal jewels, were well and truly over.

An altogether more mature, businesslike woman now emerged, favoring simple, uncluttered clothes and jewellery, which was both practical and modern in concept and design.

Vintage Jewellery :-

Is becoming extremely popular for today’s woman.
Modern costume jewellery is cheaply made in vast quantities by machines.

Made from materials that are poor substitutes for the precious stones they imitate.

For very much the same price as a new plastic bead necklace from a designer store, you can purchase a beautiful vintage piece.

An investment that will increase in value.

An original gift, something beautiful to enjoy and pass onto a daughter or granddaughter in years to come.

Something with a history, that dates from times past.
Vintage jewellery was handmade using traditional techniques. From first class materials which look and feel genuine, expensive and precious.

About me:-

I teach beading on a voluntary basis at my local community arts studio, and have had a lot of experience in costume jewellery restoration and repair. I have no formal training but am very passionate about what I do.

I love to buy, repair, wear and resell.

Too often in our society good things are disposed of as we have lost the skills to repair them, or simply don't have the time.
Buying, wearing, repairing and rehoming old treasures is a ecologically friendly way for me to gain experience and increase my collection. Whilst preserving, what I feel, is an important part of our social history.
