OLD EKURASI (WATCHMAN'S CHAIR)

This solid wooden chair with its unique elaborate hand-carved designs is known as an Ekurasi (meaning "Village"), and commonly (humorously so) refered to in Ghana as a "Watchman's Chair", because they are so comfortable night watchmen fall asleep easily !

They are traditionally used to relax.

This particular chair was purchased in the late 70's / early 80's when we were living in Ghana.

Our house-keeper had inherited it from his father. The former was over 60 years old (in appx 1980) when we purchased the chair from him, and his father had "long time ago" (quote unquote) passed away. A guesstimate of this chair's age may therefore be made, but your guess is as good as mine.

It's aged tribal use is however 100% guaranteed. The chair was brought from his village when he was employed by us, and he continued to use it frequently.

As may be appreciated from the images, the front of the chair is well weathered from use, and the back has been much more preserved due to the back always facing the ground in a more protected position from the elements.

Since it has been in our posession, we have not attempted to clean it thoroughly or put any sort of chemical whatsoever on it's front part.

It would be very easy to give the chair a good clean with a toothbrush & apply a transparent coat of wood preserver if desired.

Personally however, I would not do this, as like with any old ethnical object, part of its charm is in its authentic state of natural wear & preservation.

The chair has since purchase been displayed in a study indoors for the past almost 30 years.

Its dimensions are : (a VHS Video has been placed on the chair in one of the images for ease of reference)

Large half : 133cms X 40cms X 6.5 cms (52.5" X 15.5" X 2.5")

Small half : 77cms X 38cms X 6cms (30.5" X 15" X 2.5")
