Longcase Clock
John Greenwood of Rochester
c.1795
You are bidding on a painted face 8 day longcase clock dating from around 1795.
The maker is John Greenwood of Rochester , Kent. He is recorded in Brian Loomes's Clockmakers of the World as working between 1793-95, "opposite the rump in the High Street". This information has probably been extracted from a business census and the rump being a geographical feature.
The case is oak. Have a look at the close up images to seen the grain. The condition is very good. It has the more desirable long door. The hood is topped with three gilded wooden finials. There are a few inevitable old worm holes. These are long dead and wouldn't be a problem in todays centrally heated houses. There is a piece of beading missing on the lower part of the trunk on the right flank where the base meets the body. If you want me to get the work done it would cost about £50 or you could get it done yourself and it will probably be cheaper with London prices as they are.
The movement is solid brass with a bell chime. It is a 8 day movement with the chime and movement run by two weights.
The movement, face and case are original to each other. This is not a marriage.
The painted face is has a seconds and date dial. The finish is beautifully crazed with sharp painted roman numerals.
The pendulum and brass faced bob are original.
The clock works well and has a pleasing steady tick. It keeps good time.
Complete with winding crank.

If you would like to view beforehand then please email me. If on collection you feel the clock is not for you I am happy to forgo the sale without detriment to you. But this is unlikely, as the clock is even better in the flesh.
This clock would look great in a hallway or dining room.
Dimensions 88" tall with finial 83" without. x 18" wide ( at top of hood) x 9 " deep
The hood is removeable and the movement lifts out. This means that if you would like to collect then you will not need a van just a large hatchback or estate.
