'Tobias Caceres' Virgin of Guadalupe Retablo

This small simple folk art retablo of Mexico's patron saint, Our Lady (Virgin) of Guadalupe.  This retablo is very traditional in style and is an open shadow box with no doors. 

Artist: Tobias Caceres, Peru - a retablo artisan increasing in popularity worldwide and already a collectable artist.  I also stock his Nativity retablos and another style of Virgin retablo at the moment and hope to increase my collection over time. 

About Retablos

Retablos, derived from the Latin term ‘retro tabula’ or ‘behind the altar’, refer to devotional images typically placed behind an altar or table.  Deeply rooted in Spanish colonial history, the folk art originated with painted, sculpted or carved religious images.   The Peruvian version of retablo  incorporate detailed, three-dimensional scenes consisting of many figures in very complex environments in a shadow box and can include religious scenes or depictations of daily life, and of course the wonderful Day of the Dead calaveras or skeletons.   The boxes form miniature houses or shrines, often with opening doors and a gable above the opening. Typically both the doors and the sides of the box are covered with an ornate, polychrome floral decoration.
