The history of this range:
This design was originally the work of Robert Radford Welch (1929-2000). Appointed in 1955 as design consultant for small family firm J & J Wiggin of Bloxwich, the only serious British manufacturer of stainless steel tableware at the time, he created the 'Alveston' range in 1962 - named after his home town in Warwickshire - which was marketed under the brand name 'Old Hall'. It's success was legendary, and the range became a design icon of the 60's. Welch continued to win international respect in the form of a number of highly coveted design awards, as well as being 'Royal Designer for Industry' in 1965 and receiving an MBE in 1979. Much of his work, including the Alveston range, continues to be given pride of place in some of the most prestigious museums in the world including the Victoria & Albert (London) and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). Welch continued to design for the Old Hall firm until its closure in 1984 whilst also working on a number of other famous projects in both stainless steel and silverware with the very best of international manufacturers. Oneida, who are in themselves a highly respected manufacturer of tablewares, bought the closing Old Hall firm, and have reproduced limited numbers of this iconic range, which is now becoming more and more difficult to find as production has once again ceased.
You are therefore buying a small chunk of British design history!
