Cover, contents and labels: The Sleeve and any extra items such as a lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as 'unplayed' or 'sealed' should be described as mint. EXCELLENT (EX) - Record: Shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. VERY GOOD (VG) - Record: Has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the odd light scratch. GOOD (G) - Record: Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. FAIR - Record: Is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise - it may even jump. POOR - Record: Will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc. Bad - Record and Sleeve etc: Will be unplayable or might even be broken. Only used as a collection filler. I play every item and grade accordingly - following the grading system given in the Record Collector but with some variations. Unlike Record Collector I ‘shade’ gradings with a ‘PLUS’ (+) or ‘MINUS’ (-), so items may be listed as "VG+" or "EX-". I also often grade how a record looks, as well as plays, for example "RECORD LOOKS VG, PLAYS VG+".
