BORDEN'S

Although Borden is today a diversified company with four major divisions, its origin, like most great undertakings, was the idea of one man. Gail Borden. Jr., the founder, was a rugged individualist and a great humanitarian. Prior to founding what was to become Borden, Inc., he already had enough careers to satisfy the most restless of men. He was at times a riverman, a school teacher, a surveyor, a government official, a newspaper publisher and an inventor. As surveyor he helped lay out the city of Covington, Kentucky. He published the first permanent newspaper in Texas and is credited with having coined the phrase “Remember the Alamo!” as a headline. He invented something called a “prairie schooner” which was a wagon with sails, a “lazy susan” table, and a product he called a meat biscuit that went to California with the miners in the Gold Rush of 1849. His biscuit won him a gold medal, presented by Queen Victoria, at the Great Council Exposition in London in 1851. On the long sea voyage back home Borden was deeply affected by the sight of babies deprived of fresh milk because the cows kept aboard ship were too seasick to be milked. He set out to discover a method of preserving milk—a technique that had escaped the best minds since the discovery of cheese thousands of years before. Two years later, in 1853, he had a satisfactory product: pure fresh milk with most of the water removed under vacuum at low temperature, and sugar added as a preservative. He called it condensed milk and later gave it the name "Eagle Brand." His original vacuum pan is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. D.C. In 1856 Gail Borden received his patent on condensed milk and that same year set up a factory in an abandoned carriage shop in Wolcottville, Connecticut. He opened a sales office in New York City, designed most of the machinery, ran the factory, and sold the milk products from a pushcart on the New York streets. In 1918 the Borden company, in an attempt to promote condensed milk, commissioned Norman Rockwell to do some advertisements. Two paintings were done, one “Conscience and Cornbread” and the other “Head of the Class” appeared in 1918 in Delineator, Ladies’Home Journal, St Nicholas and Youth’s Companion.

Among the many prints listed in our store, are approximately 100 reproductions of many of the best paintings that Rockwell used in the advertisements enjoyed by America over the past century.  Most of the paintings were done in color and some were sketched in black and white.  These beautifully reproduced old book prints are vivid and bright, although they were printed over 20 years ago.  These are printed on heavy stock, and subsequently, any art print or text on the reverse does not show through.   The detail of this depiction of vintage Americana advertising is very beautiful.

About my prints...
The prints I sell are mostly from vintage and antique portfolios and books, making them excellent alternatives to expensive art prints, which you can expect to pay much more for in today's market. The publishers knew their work would be closely examined and under intensive scrutiny by art critics. When compared to expensive posters, the colors in these prints are often quite noticeably more vivid and sharp. In some cases these prints are the only possible way to acquire copies of the rare paintings, engravings, and photographic images you'll find in my eBay store. My shipping procedures...
A lot of care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in plastic sleeves, gently rolled, and mailed in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Larger orders and Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard using creative methods to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your prints. A large tube mailer may be used for larger prints depending upon what appears to be the safest way to ship. PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGING THEM WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.

• Domestic Orders (within the United States)...
• Paying with PayPal will expedite your order and will allow you to be able to see when your package was shipped and delivered (delivery confirmation). When paying with PayPal, your order will be shipped to the address specify in PayPal when making your payment.
• Paying with Check/Money Order is acceptable but will result in delays because they must clear my bank before your order will be shipped. Delivery confirmation will usually register the delivery date for orders not paid through PayPal. There is a $20.00 charge for returned checks. When paying with check or money order, your order will ship to the address you specified in ebay.
• All domestic orders are insured with my personal guarantee. If your print is damaged upon arrival, I will replace it. If a replacement is not available, I will refund the cost of the item.
• When your order is shipped, you will receive a shipping notification by email the moment we print the prepaid label to mail your order. If your domestic order has not arrived within 14 days, please contact the postal service to report a lost shipment. Provide them with the delivery confirmation or tracking number found in the Shipping Notification email and the ship date. They will try to track down the package. If it still hasn't arrived within 20 days, please contact me and I will see that your order is shipped again if the package is confirmed undelivered.
• International Orders...
• Only PayPal payments accepted for international orders.
• International packages can only be tracked if you select Priority or Express Mail.
• Insurance is not available for international orders. However...
• If you select Priority or Express Mail and your order has not arrived within six weeks, we will send your order again only if you pay for shipping again.
• If you select Standard economy shipping and your order doesn't arrive within six weeks, we will send your order again only if you pay for shipping plus half the cost of the prints again. This is due to our inability to track, confirm, or insure packages shipped economy mail. (Limit one replacement order at half price).
• We always try to ship within 1-3 days of payment. Please check with your local postal service to determine standard ship time for mail from the United States. If your international order has not arrived within six weeks, please contact me. If replacements are available we will re-ship your order if you will pay for shipping again. Delivery problems are extremely rare for the number of international orders we ship.
