Wheatgrass is the young grass of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum.  It is an excellent source of protein, with around one gram of protein per teaspoon.  The protein in wheatgrass contains 19 of the 22 amino acids, including all of the eight essential amino acids (those the body can't make for itself).  It is therefore an excellent source of protein for vegans, who often struggle to find good, non-animal sources of protein.

Harts Creek Farm is organically certified by Biogro NZ; a leading New Zealand organic certification company.  Biogro inspect the farm to ensure that the growing and processing conditions meet organic certification requirements.

The production process involves several steps.  The wheatgrass is harvested while the plant is still young, i.e. below 30 cm tall.  Within 1-6 hours of harvest, the wheatgrass is transported to an organically certified dehydrating company where the moisture content is reduced to approximately 4%.  This is accomplished through the use of hot air dryers.  The drying process takes between 20 and 25 minutes.  Wheatgrass samples are taken every hour and added to a daily batch which is tested for quality assurance.  Once the powder has been dried it is then transported to the primary mill, which reduces the particle size of the wheatgrass to approximately 150 - 200 microns.  This is then sent to the secondary mill for further milling to reduce the particle size to 50 microns (approximately 270 mesh).  Once the powder has been milled it is then packaged, awaiting transport to the UK.

SUGGESTED USE:

We recommend that you take one heaped teaspoon (3.5 grams) mixed with water or juice, once or twice a day.  It should ideally be taken mid-morning and/or mid-afternoon.  We also recommend that you take a reduced dose (e.g. half the normal dose) during the first week to minimise detoxification symptoms.

This wheatgrass is organically certified by Biogro in New Zealand and by the Soil Association in the UK.  This process involves several stages, all intended to ensure that consumers are guaranteed to receive an organic product.  Firstly, Harts Creek Farm is inspected annually to ensure it meets all the organic growing requirements.  In addition, all processors of the wheatgrass (e.g. the company that harvests the wheatgrass, the drying company, the mill and the packaging unit) need to be organically certified.  Once the product has been packed it is then inspected by Biogro NZ who issue an organic certificate of inspection.  This is a certification document which confirms that this wheatgrass is organic.  Once the wheatgrass arrives in the UK, the accompanying certificate of inspection is validated by the Port Health Authority who inspect the goods to see if they match what is on the certificate of inspection.  Only then are we able to market the wheatgrass as organic.  To provide customers with an audit check, all organic products must have a certification code identifying the organic certification company (e.g. "GB organic certification 5" for the Soil Association) so a customer can contact the certification company to check that the product is actually organically certified.
