A brief history of the traditional Witch Doctor
The phrase “Witch-Doctor” was first used to describe certain people in the early 18th century who tried to undo the bad spells and curses that witches had put on local people. The Encyclopaedia Britannica states that the first record of the use of this term was in 1718, in a book by Francis Hutchinson. All manner of maladies and problems were blamed on, usually, old women who lived nearby who were, in the hysteria of the time, called witches. Later on, in the nineteenth century amidst a backdrop of fevered British colonialism, the term Witch Doctor was resurrected to talk pejoratively about shamans and medicine main in almost every native culture they encountered from African to North America. In essence, although the intent was demeaning, insulting and wrong, it was the in fact the right title because what they were actually doing was the same as the earlier Witch Doctors in the north of England, that is, they were removing maladies and problems from people using incantations and charms and a solid belief that these things would work.
