Damals  ~  also known as Back Then or At that Time, Universum Film A.G. (UFA), 1943. Black and white, 88 minutes, German language, no subtitles. Clam-shell box with color insert. VHS release by Black Hill Pictures, 2001. This is a lightly used PAL format VHS intended for European use. It is in German and does not have English subtitles. It is from my own collection and has been played just a few times. Virtually any VHS VCR will play this tape but North Americans must have a multisync television in order to correctly display the signal. The good news is that most recent TVs intended for the US or Canadian markets are multisync, but not all are. Check your TV manual or the maker's website. A German film classic from the Nazi era.

This film is an actual crime drama which is kind of rare for Nazi era German film. But then Damals is a noteworthy film for several reasons. It was Zarah Leander's last German film with the exception of the unfinished Träumerei. It also brought Leander directly into conflict with Joseph Goebbels after she basically went on strike when she discovered Ufa had been ignoring the clause in her contract that called for 53% of her salary to be sent to Sweden. Although she finished the film, Leander declined Goebbels' offer of German citizenship and other perks and returned to Sweden. As for the film, it related in artful flashbacks, a passionate love, a threatened marriage, and a suspicion of murder. It did not last long in the theaters. Six weeks after the premier, Leander left Germany.

Director: Rolf Hansen. Writers: Peter Groll, Rolf Hansen, and Bert Roth (original story). Composers: Ralph Benatzky and Lothar Brühne. Director of Photography: Franz Weihmayr. Editor: Walter Haag.

Zarah Leander: Beginning her acting-singing career in provincial Swedish theaters in 1929, she soon worked her way up to starring roles in Stockholm and Vienna. After the defection of Marlene Dietrich to the United States and her open opposition to the Nazi government, Swedish singer Zarah Leander was brought to Goebbels' attention by the UFA casting department as a possible replacement. In 1936 Leander signed a contract with UFA, despite her imperfect command of German. At first afraid the Leander might prove to be too exotic for the German public, Goebbels had nothing to fear. She was an immediate smash after the release of her first major film, Toward New Shores (1937). This success was immediately followed by La Habanera in 1938 which proved to be one of the high points of Nazi era German cinema. During World War II, Leander became the highest-paid actress of the Nazi cinema, commanding fees that rivaled those of Hans Albers. Her position as a major box-office draw both in and out of Germany enabled Leander to select her directors and even maintain her friendships with elements deemed undesireable by the Nazi state. After the war she tried to re-establish her career with Swedish audiences but was slow to overcome their hostility. Her few post-war films met with little success but in the 1960s she enjoyed a come-back of sorts appearing in musicals and concerts in Germany and Austria.
