What is in Nurofen
This product is called Nurofen 5% Gel.
It contains the active ingredient Ibuprofen Ph.Eur 5% w/w

It also contains: Purified water, Isopropyl alcohol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Benzyl alcohol, Sodium hydroxide

Nurofen 5% Gel belongs to a group of medicines called topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers.

How does Nurofen 5% Gel Work?
Nurofen 5% Gel belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is gently rubbed into the skin to relieve pain, local heat and swelling (inflammation) in conditions such as backache, rheumatic and muscular pain, sprains, strains, sports injuries.

Check before you use Nurofen Muscular Pain Gel:
Do not use:
if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients listed above, aspirin or other pain relievers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
If you have ever had an asthma attack, rash or runny nose after taking aspirin or any NSAIDs
If you are under 14 years old

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before use:
If you get asthma
If you are taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAID pain relievers
If you are pregnant

How to use Nurofen 5% Gel:
When first opening the tube: Check that the tube seal is not broken. To break seal, press against the point hidden in the top surface of the cap.

Adults and children over 14 years: Squeeze 4 to 10 cm of gel onto the affected area then replace the cap. Gently rub the gel in until it is absorbed -  then wash your hands straight away.

(This represents a dose of 50- 125 mg of Ibuprofen). Do not exceed the stated dose

Do not:
Apply more gel within 4 hours
Apply it more than 4 times in 24 hours
Use it on broken or inflamed skin, on the lips, genital area or near the eyes
Cover with bandages, dressings or plasters

This gel is for external use only.
Talk to your doctor if your symptoms worsen or if there is no improvement after 2 weeks treatment
Stop using the gel if you develop a rash

Whilst using Nurofen 5% Gel:
If the gel is swallowed by mistake:

If a child under 14 years old swallows the gel, talk to your doctor straight away
For adults: rinse out your mouth

Swallowing the gel may cause an upset stomach - talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned

Side effects
Some people may get one or more side effects when using Nurofen 5% Gel - however they do not affect everyone:
Mild reddening and tingling of the skin where you have applied the gel
Unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, skin rash, itching, bruising, or facial swelling - this may be a rare serious allergic reaction, seek medical help at once
Rarely, stomach discomfort or pain
