Design-A-Laser

Can’t find the laser you’re looking for ?

Ever wanted to design your own laser ?

Laser Know How has made it possible with its easy to follow “Design-A-Laser” process exclusive through eBay.

Everything can be achieved in just 3 simple steps using our guidelines below.

Note: At each eBay Checkout select "Request Total", then when all components are purchased you will receive a combined invoice listing all items to ensure nothing is missing. You will also benefit from combined discounted shipping.

Step 1
Select the assembly package which includes, the enclosure, all parts including wiring, cost of assembly and test, but exluding the cost of laser modules and scanners which you buy seperately for maximum choice.

There are simply 3 assembly packages to choose from which are based on the total laser power capacity of your system. Choose from our listings with descriptions similar to:-

NRG <500mW CUSTOM LASER LIGHT SHOW - DESIGN-YOUR-OWN !
NRG <1500mW CUSTOM LASER LIGHT SHOW - DESIGN-YOUR-OWN !
NRG <15W CUSTOM LASER LIGHT SHOW - DESIGN-YOUR-OWN !

Note, if you decide to start off with 500mW laser system for example, you may want to choose a 1500mW assembly enclosure which would leave room for future expansion and upgrade of laser power or additional laser colours.

Step2

Choose the laser modules in terms of colour and power. You will find a wide range of over 30 types of laser modules listed in our eBay shop with a potential of 1000s of combinations. See below for a list of available laser modules and tips on choosing the right combination for your perfect laser.

RED 150mW - 5 Watts
GREEN 50mW - 18 Watts
BLUE 50mW - 5 Watts

Example listing:-
NRG 100mW GREEN LASER MODULE KIT FOR LASER LIGHT SHOWS

Step 3

Choose the laser scanner speed of your projector, basically the faster the scanner, the better the graphics and the bigger the useable scan angle.Choose from our listings with descriptions similar to:-

NRG LASER LIGHT SHOW GALVO SCANNER KIT 15000 POINTS/S

NRG LASER LIGHT SHOW GALVO SCANNER KIT 20000 POINTS/S

NRG LASER LIGHT SHOW GALVO SCANNER KIT 40000 POINTS/S

NRG LASER LIGHT SHOW GALVO SCANNER KIT 50000 POINTS/S

When all 3 steps are complete send us an e-mail and you will receive a combined invoice with discounted carriage.

All lasers have audio/auto/DMX and ILDA control as standard.

We also have listed a range of ILDA software and controller packages to choose from.

As a quick guide we have provided you with a table of recommended laser diode combinations to help choose the perfect laser for your application.

To give you maximum flexibility we have listed every individual laser module, scanner and assembly package in our eBay shop listings.

Please take some time to read the guidance notes below.

Notes:
1. All modules are listed with 10Khz Analogue modulation, this enables the laser power output to be controlled via the ILDA port.
2. TTL modulation and higher rates up to 30kHz, are available.
3. Green diodes have a wavelength of 532nm, green is the brightest colour to the human eye.
4. There are a choice of 3 wavelengths for the red lasers, 635nm, 655nm and 671nm. In order of cost 655nm is the least, however this is not the  brightest of the three wavelengths. 635nm is the brightest red although much higher cost than the 655nm. 671nm is the least brightest of the 3 wavelengths and the most expensive. The advantage 671nm has over the other two is that is has a much tighter beam with a smaller divergence and beam diameter, hence at long projection distances, the 671nm red is preferred. Generally, the beam diameter of the 635nm and 655nm are much greater than the blue and green lasers, it is a limitation in the technology, but this may change in the future.
5. The blue laser diodes have 2 wavelengths, 473nm and 457nm, generally the 473nm blue is used for power outputs up to 500mW per diode, for higher power blue the 457nm diodes are preferred.
6. It should be noted that the actual power quoted of the diode is the minimum output and will generally be higher from new.
7.  When laser diodes are combined using optics and reflected off the scanner mirrors, the output power from the projector aperture will be down by at least 30% caused by losses by the optics.
8. Choosing the right combination will depend on your own requirements, in terms of performance and cost.

Some Quick Tips

Laser Power
Often depends on background lighting and distance being projected. You can get away with low power under low light conditions.

Laser Colour
You can choose single colour red, green or blue. Red, yellow and green (RGY) is achieved using 2 laser diodes, red and green. Full colour, white light, is achieved by combining red, green and blue (RGB) lasers. In order to achieve the right combination and save cost, sometimes 2 identical lasers are combined. For example it may be more cost effective to use 2 x 500mW blue diodes instead of a single 1000mW blue diode. It is not always cost that defines the combining of identical laser modules, it may simply be that there is not higher power diode available at that wavelength, therefore 2 need to be combined to achieve the higher power. Usually no more than 2 identical laser diodes are combined.

Laser Scanners
We only use Galvanometer scanners in all our products, not to be confused with poor performance stepper motors. Generally the higher the speed of the scanner and the wider the angle, will allow for much better defined graphics. When choosing scanners you will need to ensure that that match the ILDA controller in order to prevent them being over-driven and damaged.

The Laser Know How, Design-A-Laser process allow complete flexibility, here are 2 typical examples:-

1) Start off with a single colour and upgrade in the future to more colours or higher powers.

2) Start off with 15K or 20K scanners and upgrade in the future to 40K or 50K scanners.

Safety
Please remember at the end of the day, lasers can be harmful if not used in a safe manner, for this reason there are a number of health and safety guidelines available as well as standards produced by the government and laser lighting industry professionals like the ILDA. We have built many safety features in to our systems to comply with the guidelines, but this only covers the equipment, the responsibility to operate the equipment falls on the operator. For more information on standards and guidelines for operating laser show equipment please visit the ILDA web site.
Our Design-A-Laser range includes our Laser Safety remote control interlock free of charge, worth £40.

If you have any questions or require further information or advice, please drop us an email.

Note: All pictures of laser effects i this listing are examples of what can be achieved from the fully assembled system once lasers modules and scanners have been added to the package.

About Us

ALL NRG LASERS are designed and specified by Laser Know How Limited in the UK. We have over 18 years experience in the manufacture and design of laser systems. We are a corporate member of the International Laser Display Association (ILDA) and all our products are manufactured to their high standards and expectations.

Our founder and owner has been manufacturing lasers in the UK since 1988 from the pioneering days of high voltage power supplies and gas filled plasma tubes. Laser Know How has exploited the latest technology of solid state diode lasers and advanced control technology to give you the latest and very best performance.

The manufacture of competitively priced laser display products in the UK is currently perceived to be no longer financially viable; Laser Know How has researched over 40 factories in the Far East in search of those that can meet our high expectations.
A select few now make exclusive products specific to our designs and requirement specifications.
Testing, quality assurance, distribution and support is still conducted in the UK.

Buying an NRG laser from Laser Know How gives you:-
  • Peace of mind - Reliable and Dependant
  • Safety consideration - Each NRG laser has over 5 specific laser safety features
  • Spectacular Effects - designed for ultimate impact
  • ILDA port - custom control options
  • Value for money - without compromise on Reliability and Safety
  • Technical Support - Fast response for advice plus Spares and Repairs service direct from the UK.

Our founder and owner is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and is a qualified Chartered Engineer. He also provides consultancy services to the aerospace industry, so he's fussy when it comes down to detail.
