He ws appointed Chief Assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in 1894.  From 1905 to 1910 he was Astronomer Royal for Scotland and Director of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. In 1910 he returned to Greenwich to take charge of the Royal Observatory on his appointment as Astronomer Royal, where remained until his retirement in 1933 at the age of 65.  He was the ninth holder of that office since the foundation of the Observatory by Charles ll in 1675.//
