From 1905 to 1910 he was Astronomer Royal for Scotland and Director of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. In 1910 he returned to Greenwich to take charge of the Royal Observatory on his appointment as Astronomer Royal, where remained until his retirement in 1933 at the age of 65.
