The tapping massage involves making short, striking movements with either the side of one’s hand, the flat hand or the fist. This encourages the circulation of the blood in the skin and releases tension in the musculature. If the tapping occurs near the lungs, this improves the clearance of mucus from the lungs. Shiatsu (finger pressure) is a form of Japanese body therapy, developed from the traditional Chinese massage. The massage technique consists of soft, rhythmic, deeply effective stretches and rotations. Shiatsu aims to stimulate particular points on the body and to mobilise the musculature.
Rolling is one of the most pleasant and relaxing hand movements in massage. This massage technique is often used at the end of a massage to relax the musculature and as recovery. Rolling is a pleasant combination of tension and relaxation of the musculature and is especially calming and relaxing.
The skin and musculature are gripped and kneaded with either the thumbs, index fingers or both hands. In Kneading, the affect on the musculature is produced by the hands of the masseur. Clapping involves making light claps with the whole hand in order to improve the circulation of the blood around the musculature and below.
