The device uses the principle of bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) to calculate your body fat percentage.  After you give information about yourself (weight, height, age, sex, from which your body mass index is calculated), grip the analysis pads.  A tiny, harmless elecrical current is sent through your body to measure the total volume of water in your body.  The higher percentage of water found in lean tissue and muscle (as opposed to fat) enables the device to calculate your percentage body fat.  A simple graphic display using icons makes understanding the results quick and easy.
