Japanese Noren / Door Curtain

A noren is a traditional Japanese door curtain. As well as being used by shops and restaurants to announce being open for business, many people hang them in their homes where they are used to divide space without compromising on light or airflow.

With this in mind, many noren are made of very light fabric, often a combination of polyester, hemp, cotton and rayon.

The 100% cotton varieties tend to be heavier and as such, are more likely to be used to mask an internal door or cupboard

(think downstairs loo or utility room!) or even as a wall hanging.

If you use a bead or bamboo curtain in your kitchen or conservatory in the summer to keep the insects out, then you may find that

a noren is an upgrade in both style and effectiveness!

The design on a noren is either printed or dyed. The technique employed, as well as the weight of the fabric, will determine whether or not the design can be seen from both sides.

A full-length noren usually finishes above the floor – the size of the gap will naturally depend on how big your doorframe is but an approximate idea is about 20-25cm. We do have some half sizes and these tend to do very nicely for children’s rooms or hallways.

Noren traditionally have a split along the centre line which finishes about 20-25cm from the pole. Some noren are sold uncut, leaving you to decide how much to cut or even whether to cut or not. Obviously if using to adorn a wall you may choose to leave the noren intact.

To hang your noren you could use either an extending or bamboo pole. These are relatively inexpensive and easy to find and therefore not included in this sale. (Besides, we’re not quite sure how to pack and send a bamboo pole!)

Noren are easy to wash and if the design is printed, shouldn't be ironed.

(If you hang them to dry they won't need it anyway.)

Noren are relatively unknown in the UK and as such, are difficult to source – you are highly unlikely to find them in any shops here except perhaps very specialised boutiques (although I have yet to come across any). We have a selection of styles and colours to choose from.

Many of these were purchased as one-offs or in very low quantities, meaning that you could soon own something that nobody else does – clearly an added bonus!
