Slate frames are historically the standard and best frame to use for all needlework and they go back at least to the middle ages, even today The Royal School of Needlework states :
“We generally recommend the use of a slate frame for a serious embroidery project as it keeps the work taut and
helps to achieve a professional finish.”
The Slate Frame is the embroider’s wish come true being both strong and light they are easy to work hand held and they hold the fabric taut and even. This is due to the fine adjustment of the peg system, the strong square section of the top and bottom bars and the large number of staples used on the attachment tapes. This all ensures work comes off the frame and stays flatter and squarer than when the common rotating frames are used.
A major advantage over rotating frames is that being a square section frame there is no sag unlike the larger rotating frames in which the round sections need to be made heavier and heavier however like the rotating frames the material can still be wound round the frame and worked on in sections. Further side tension can be added with threads but is rarely needed in reality.
Due to popular demand and a lack or commercial suppliers ITA are pleased to add this new product to their extensive range of frames and stands.
This item provides up to a 12x12 inch (30x30cm) aperture with a a multitude of closely spaced and staggered adjustment holes and is supplied with 4 lightweight but very strong aluminium locking pegs (spare pegs are available just ask if you cannot find the listing for them).

Two very interesting and informative web sites discussing the merits and how to Dress a slate frame are (don’t be put off by the complicated examples sewing the workpiece to the tapes and stretching the frame is normally enough):
