Europa 2007 Centenary of Scouting

100 years of adventure

Lord Robert Baden-Powell (1857 to 1941) was a decorated soldier best known for his defence of Mafeking during the Boer War. Impressed how boys used their intuition during the siege, he was inspired to rewrite his handbook for soldiers, Aids to Scouting, for a younger audience. In 1907 he held an experimental camp at Brownsea Island in Poole to put into practice his ideas of teaching young people the responsibilities of good citizenship. It was here that the Scouting Movement was born. Scouting for Boys was published a year later in six fortnightly parts. What was originally a training aid for existing organisations became a worldwide movement.

Six months after it began in England, Guernsey’s first troop was formed. Called the 1st Guernsey Victoria it still operates today. By 1911 it had become so popular that the Guernsey Association of Boy Scouts was formed.

In 1910 Baden-Powell set up the Girl Guides and in 1914 the Wolf Cub Handbook was published for the under-11s. Changes began in 1966, with modifications to uniforms and training; by 1 January 2007 all Scout Groups in the country had to admit girls. Today there are more than 28 million members in 216 countries worldwide. To celebrate the centenary of the Worldwide Scouting Movement our stamps reflect the changes in uniforms and activities over the past century. The first, the 32p value, depicts a Scout camping in the great outdoors. Resourcefulness at all times is a main characteristic of a Scout. Having a well-sheltered harbour in the capital town of St Peter Port, sailing is a particularly popular activity for Scouts in Guernsey, featured on the 37p value. The third stamp, the 45p, shows two Scouts fishing from rocks – one of which has a catch. Identification of the species will be closely followed by it being carefully and safely put back into the water.

The 48p value shows three Scouts flying a model aircraft, a hobby that encourages concentration and manual dexterity. As awareness of our environment grows ever more important, expeditions such as caving, featured on the 50p stamp, are essential for Scouts to learn about our changing world. Scouting has always reflected new trends and activities, which is why the Street Sports Activity Badge depicting a skateboarder was introduced in 2006.Our last stamp, the 71p, features Scouts rollerblading down a slalom course at Cambridge Park in St. Peter Port.

Since its foundation in 1907, Scouting’s core aim is even more relevant than ever. It promotes the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential grows from strength to strength.
