Cassini's Historical Map series covers the whole of England and Wales. It is based on Ordnance Survey's one inch to the mile (Old Series) maps, published between 1805 and 1874. This was the first accurate national survey and records a time of momentous transition from an agrarian to an industrialised society.
A central feature of the Historical Map series is that the originals have been combined, re-scaled and re-projected exactly to match Ordnance Survery's modern-day Landrangers®. They even have the same map identification number and the same British National Grid references. This enables direct comparison of the past and present in a way not possible with maps of different specifications. They are the same size as the Landrangers® when open or folded and have a similar laminated colour cover.
Whether you're a local historian, a genealogist, a student, a walker or someone with a general interest in the history of your area, these maps will be a valuable addition to your library. Although often hidden behind unfamiliar names or buried under concrete or tarmac, the past is all around us and waiting to be discovered. Cassini's Historical Map series will help point out the way.
