THE ANDERTON COMPANY STOKE ON TRENT

CD ROM 27 IMAGES OF PAGES OF THE BOOK BOTH IN ORIGINAL SIZE AND A4 FOR EASY PRINTING. ALSO 3 REFERENCE PICTURES OF CRAFT PLUS THE IWM NOTES AND SKETCH PLAN OF "SUNLIGHT" SCANNED AT HI RESOLUTION.

In 1978 Inland Waterways Models required detailed information to allow a accurate model to be made of J G Meakin’s motor boat “Alice”. Harold Hood the former dock foreman was traced with the help of Ken Keay of the Walsall boat dock. Having had a couple of meetings with Mr Hood he allowed me to copy the little exercise book which contained the entire notes they had made on construction of both Anderton Company and other customers boats. The booklet is hand written and you do need to have some knowledge of wooden narrowboat building to be able to interpret what is there. It does give a wonderful insight into the world of wooden boatbuilding.
Mr hood later followed up with a sketch of Anderton fore ends showing the fly boat roundels, this too is included.
Later IWM was to build a model of “Sunlight” a Potter and son butty boat built by the Anderton company. This was at the time out awaiting repair at Keay’s dock. Measurements were taken from the boat together with necessary notes. These notes came to light recently and although again hand written are included as they constitute the nearest to a plan in existence for one of these boats.

Many “Knobstick” motors were conversions of horse boats, “Sweden” now in private hands still exists in original condition, very few other boats now survive intact.
