Banana and exotic seed kits These seed kits are one of the easiest ways to grow exotics. The seeds are as fresh as we can source and germination tests are very good, with well over 80% in our trials. Each kit is supplied with 5 seeds, 5 small pots, enough of the correct compost to fill the pots and a small amount of GA3. When the kit arrives all you need to do is fill the GA3 container half full of cooled boiled water. Make sure the lid is secured onto the container and shake well. Leave to stand for about an hour and if no sediment has fallen to the bottom of the container you are ready for the next stage. If sediment had formed on the bottom of the container, shake well again and keep repeating until all the powder has dissolved. When the liquid is clear it is now ready to add the seeds. Banana seeds can be placed in the container and topped up with cooled boiled water and the lid replaced. On seeds with oily coverings (Ravenala madagascariensis) the covering is first removed and then the seeds are ready for soaking. Seeds such as Strelitzia have a fluffy coloured tuff attached to the seed. Under this tuft is the germination point and the freshness of the seeds can be determined by the quality of this tuft. When this is removed the seeds are ready for soaking. Please note that people with sensitive skin may have a reaction when removing the outer coverings or tufts so it is advisable to use gloves when preparing the seeds. With the seeds in the solution and the lid secured it is advisable to label the container with the seeds and date. Shake the bottle twice a day for 5 days. For better germination it is recommended to keep the container warm. After 5 days fill the pots with the compost and stand the pots in cooled boiled water until the surface of the soil is damp to wet. Plant the seeds to a depth of about 2cm. Cover the seeds with compost, they don’t need light to germinate but like it warm. Place the pots in a propagator or in a sealed plastic bag. Make sure the soil is always damp and high humidity is maintained. Keeping the pots above 30’C will increase the success rate of germination. This is the most reliable way we have found to get the seeds started. Germination is a bit erratic and all the seeds may sprout at the same time, we have had most germinate in a couple of weeks and the odd one in the batch take over 6 months. Musa cheesmani This new species from Bhutan (North-east India) is a fast tall growing wild banana. It is closely related to Musa sikkimensis so should be very cold hardy, our tests this winter should prove interesting. The bright green leaves are marked with a brown-purple midrib. Fast from seed and germination is one of the quickest. POSTAGE AND PACKING: Please remember that postage and packing does mean postage and packing and not just the cost of the stamp. Most of the items need special, careful packing that I pride myself on. Wherever possible recycled packaging is used. This also takes time to collect from various sources. I try to keep packing costs as low as possible but if you do not agree that the cost covers postage, packing etc, please do not bid. If payment is through pay pal we can only ship to confirmed addresses. If you have an unconfirmed address the items will be put on back order until you inform pay pal and confirm your postal address. (This is to avoid the use of stolen credit cards and also to protect the buyer.)
