The originals were painted between 1894 and 1898 by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. They were painted to advertise the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt's various staring roles in the theatre.

Meet the artist: Alphonse Mucha, Self Portrait

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a prolific Czech painter considered the 'father' of the Art Nouveau movement. His style influenced painters, graphic artists, draughtsmen and designers worldwide and his work epitomizes Art Nouveau.
