This portrait is of Charles the Bold and is after the original by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640).
Charles the Bold or Charles the Rash (French: Charles le Téméraire) (10 November 1433 – 5 January 1477), baptised Charles Martin, was Duke of Burgundy from 1467 to 1477.
Known as Charles the Terrible to his enemies, he was the last Valois Duke of Burgundy and his early death was a pivotal, if under-recognised, moment in European history.
After his death, his domains began an inevitable slide towards division between France and the Habsburgs (who through marriage to his heiress Mary of Burgundy became his heirs). Neither side was satisfied with the results and the disintegration of the Burgundian state was a factor in most major wars in Western Europe for over two centuries.
This is a stunning English made reproduction of an original 17th Century Miniature Portrait in an imitation ebony frame. The portrait is behind glass and has been aged to look like a genuine antique piece but it is not. Miniature portraits originated in 16th Century England and continued to be fashionable up until the 19th Century, both in England and on the Continent. They were intended as a memento of a loved one or, in many cases, several were commissioned to portray a potential bride or groom to prospective spouses. Miniatures of this kind, often in the form of a brooch or locket, would sometimes contain a lock of hair of the sitter to enhance the intimate nature of the painting. They were also exchanged as gifts among the aristocracy or given as a symbol of political allegiance. Portraits of ladies, children and officers were the most popular and fashionable subjects, and are still the most valuable today. The popularity of an artist will increase a paintings worth, as will a portrait of a well known sitter.
