About Papel Picado


Papel Picado is a traditional popular art handmade by artisans from the state of Peublo, Mexico. The brightly coloured tissue paper is hand-cut, using cutting chisels and a tap pattern as a guide.

 

Although PAPEL de CHINA (tissue paper) was originally brought to Europe from China and then introduced to NEWVO ESPANA (New Spain), the indigenous people of Mexico had already been using hand made paper (AMAIL) along with the tradition of cut decorative and ceremonial images for centuries.

 

Today, PAPEL PICADO is used as decorations for all occasions, including religious celebrations such as weddings, NAVIDAD (Christmas) or for alters during DIA de los MUERTOS (Day of the Dead) and PASCUAS (Easter).
