Metaphors of Movement An Intriguing Modeling Project of Problem Solving
and Emotions of Change With Andrew T. Austin
24th April 2010, Chichester, West Sussex
Wow! I have just returned from co-training with Andy Austin in the Advanced Mastery Training sponsored by Tools For Transforming.
I would have gladly given up my training days to Andy so that I could
have learned even more (and I can’t recall saying something like that
before—ever.)
When I edited Andy’s extraordinary book, The Rainbow Machine, I kept thinking, “How on earth did he know that would work?” Now I know at least some of the answers to that question...
Metaphors of Movement is a very effective—and easily
learned—development of one aspect of “Clean Language” that provides a
way of getting people “unstuck” with a multitude of
problems—particularly useful with clients with very little access to
their internal experience, such as seriously depressed clients.Steve Andreas
In
this workshop, Andrew T. Austin, inspired by the work of Charles
Faulkner, demonstrates how to overcome stuck states and create
effective movement towards your personal goals. "Not enough people pay attention to their mode of transport," Austin explains, "in
trying to move forward in life, people need to know in which direction
they are heading and how far they need to go in order to reach their
goal. The way they transport themselves towards that goal is vitally
important and of course it is their body that is their transport."
Too often in personal development, excessive attention is paid to the
kinesthetic system and the emotions and often we find a person who
finds themselves unable to move forward until they have the right
feeling in place. Austin believes this to be a gross error. "How we move is more important than how we feel," he explains, "when
a tiger enters the room, it is the person who moves quickest that
lives. The person who worries about how they should be feeling about
that tiger will quickly become lunch."
In this
workshop, Austin demonstrates the relationship between the way a person
moves their body and the way a person moves through their mind. He
noticed that all martial arts and systems of physical movement are
highly philosophical, an example that is well known to many people is
the example from Aikido, where an opponents energy is not blocked, but
instead is redirected. "This is a metaphor that is so often used in business coaching," Austin comments.

This
is an opportunity for NLP practitioners, coaches and therapists to
discover some of the patterns of success occurring in a professionally
designed clinical practice. This training moves beyond the popular
training style of, “Edutainment” and into the attitudes of a professional change worker.
Bringing with him a clinical background in neurology and neurosciences, Andrew T. Austin will
be covering many of the practical aspects of change work so often
overlooked by NLP practitioners and trainers, therapists and change
workers in the personal development field.
"Your
presence, style and interaction with everyone was engaging, playful and
fun... which made the learning all that more enjoyable! I particularly
liked the stories you told to illustrate (or is that to entertain!?!)
certain points." Midgie Thompson, Performance and Lifestyle Coach
"Andy
Austin is an intelligent and entertaining trainer. He demonstrates high
standards regarding working with clients and more importantly, he
trains you to become aware of yourself as the clinician/coach in all
types of situations. His material is very useful for individuals who
want to increase their therapeutic skills. He cleverly leads students
to find the answers within and then offers new ideas to challenge their
learning even more. I have enjoyed my experiences learning from Andy
and I recommend him as a trainer." Rachel Hott, Ph.D. Co-director The NLP Center of NY
