But nearly 20 years after their initial formation, HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER found the trio continuing to crank out albums at a brisk rate. Don't be fooled by the title, there's nothing remotely ambient about this album--just eight good old-fashioned tracks of hard-hitting, Sabbath-esque nightmare metal.From time to time, the Melvins has been known to feature renowned special guests on their albums (1993's HOUDINI featured Kurt Cobain, 2000's THE CRYBABY featured former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, etc.). HOSTILE is no different--Tool guitarist Adam Jones guests on the album closer, "The Anti Vermin Seed," an epic 15-minute noise fest. Other instant Melvins classics include "Black Stooges," "Dr. Geek," and "The Fool, the Meddling Idiot."

First of all, there ARE some rocking tunes on this album!

The album starts off with a 30 second drum track, then bursts straight into Black Stooges; a relatively metal track with a usual melvins twist. The 2 mins of feedback at the ends of Stooges fades into Dr Geek a really weird song. It's kind of a country punk rocker song, its cool, Buzz' guitar sounds like a banjo in the riffy bits.

Little Judas Chongo is your straight forward Melvins song, and kicks arse.

The next song is odd; The Fool, The Meddling Idiot, a fantastic long, weird Melvins jam that dosen't seem to go anywhere. The weird bit is that the end is like a keyboard layered 80's pop song, which end in the same beat which started off the album.

The next, Brain Center At Whipples, is very special; an absolute Melvins classic rocker. Proper Melv tune that gets faster and faster at the end until it stops abruptly. No doubt the best on the album.

Foaming is quite similar to The Fool, a long jam which sort of goes nowhere. It is probably the weakest track on the album.

The Anti Vermin Seed is a 16 minute monster jamwhere the 'ambient' part of the album's title comes into play, a simple, quiet chug-chug bassline and patters of percussion. Then it hits a big wall of feedback and quitetens down again with some odd, spacey samples. The vocals come in around 10 mins, with Buzz in his sleazy/whispery guise for a bit. A very, different, refreshing and relaxing song to end a truly brilliant album with.

This is probably a good place to start by getting into the Melvins with. Fans won't be disappointed, the rock is there, so is the experimentalisms but not in full force.

A very challenging, refreshing experience; highly recommended!
