Nifty recording with some Buddy Holly connections. ''Ding Dong'' was the hit, but the flip is a much better tune. ''Since You Went Away To School'' was written by Norman Petty, who was Buddy Holly's recording engineer, manager and co-producer until late 1958. This record features Buddy Holly-ish guitar stylings throughout (was it fellow Coral legend Holly on guitar?). Don't know.

A year earlier, it was a recording effort with Bob Thiele that the McGuire girls found the song that they would be most closely associated with. In 1957, they came upon "Sugartime," a quasi-novelty tune brought back to New York by Thiele from Norman Petty's western studio, where Thiele had been working with Buddy Holly, who was also on Coral at the time.

By the way, ''Since You went Away To School'' was also recorded on Dot Records by Don and His Roses, the trio that was Buddy Holly's back-up singers and the Norman Petty studio singers in Clovis, New Mexico, in the late 1950s. Wouldn't be surprised if the male singers in the McQuire Sisters version were The Roses (a/k/a Don & His Roses). Again, don't know.
