Model Summary This a pre-painted model of a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.
The silver-grey tail markings (looks like a Gryphon or mythical winged-beast) are fictional and were used in the Japanese Anime Cartoon Series "AREA 88" - this aircraft was piloted by Satoru Kanzaki in that series.
The model is made to a very high standard of ABS injection moulding; with detailed accessories, accurate and precisely engraved panel lines, pre-painted aircraft detail /markings and optional transfers.
Brief History The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather carrier-capable multi-role fighter jet, designed to attack both ground and aerial targets. The F/A-18 was derived from the YF-17 in the 1970s for use by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations. It has been the aerial demonstration aircraft for the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, since 1986.
The fighter's primary missions are fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance. Its versatility and reliability have proven it to be a valuable carrier asset, though it has been criticized for its lack of range and payload compared to its earlier contemporaries, such as the F-14 Tomcat in the fighter and strike fighter role, and the A-6 Intruder and A-7 Corsair II in the attack role.
Model Details and Display Options UNDERCARRIAGE / WEAPON PARTS: There are two large sprues of pre-painted additional parts. The model is supplied with no undercarriage attached; you have the option of displaying with the undercarriage lowered (wheels down) or in-flight (wheels up). There are also additional weapon parts supplied (bombs and rockets) - the parts can be either glued or clipped-together.
CANOPY: The clear pilot canopy can be displayed either clipped on or removed.
Some minor modelling skills are required (cutting from sprues and a little glue) in order to install the undercarriage options; the pieces will just clip-together. These optional parts come on a separate sprue and nicely moulded to fit perfectly.
Model Manufacturer Details This is one model from a collection of 9 (including 1 x "special" / Secret model) available from the AREA 88 1/144 Jet Collection Volume 2 (released in 2006). As usual, this volume of models had a limited production run and are now discontinued.
The model is brand new and individually sealed in it's original plastic tray and boxed. The box has been carefully opened in order to identify which model it is, but otherwise the box is in as new condition. Please Note - The models are sold randomly packed in Japan, therefore the box must be opened to discover which model is inside.
These models in this scale have become very popular and will certainly appeal to Wargamers and collectors of Military Aviation models. They are the same scale as the Takara World Tank Museum AFV models and look the business in 12mm figure or "N Gauge" dioramas.
