Cold, austere Presbyteria Church is just another small mining town in the turn-of-the-century Pacific Northwest - and a perfect place for John Q.McCabe (Warren Beatty) and Constance Miller (Julie Christie) to bring a touch of "civilization".
He's a small-time gambler who dreams of running a big-time bordello. She's a madam from Seattle who arrives to make that dream come true. Robert Altman's dazzingly original McCabe & Mrs.Miller starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie (a Best Actress Academy Award Nominee for her work here) in the title roles, uses these colourful characters as the centre of an incisive, unpredictable retelling of frontier myths. It rolls back the clock to capture the touch, taste and very essence of a long-ago time, coupled with the edgy-irreverently modern sensibility Altman brought to such other masterworks as M*A*S*H and Nashville.
Warren Beatty stars as McCabe, a gambler who sets up his girlfriend Julie Christie as a whorehouse madam, in a bleak western set against the backdrop of a developing town in the American North West. It's an interesting tale with all the classic elements of the genre, and the affair is given added weight by the solid performances of Beatty and Christie. A reminder of just how good Robert Altman can be when he's on form.
