Wooden souvenirs known as Mauchline ware developed from a unique wooden hidden-hinge snuff box that was originally produced in Laurencekirk in north-east Scotland. However, by the beginning of the nineteenth century the secret of its manufacture had reached Ayrshire, and soon there were manufactories in several Ayrshire towns, notably Mauchline.
