What is Memory Foam ?
Memory foam is, technically, a "heat sensitive visco-elastic foam". Basically this means that it
reacts to the heat of your body and moulds itself to your shape. In doing so, it distributes
your weight evenly across an entire surface.
Memory foam was initially developed in conjunction with NASA for use in the space
programme. It helped to cushion astronauts against the stress of extreme G Forces on take
off. However it never actually went into space!
Memory foam was subsequently used in medical applications, for example where a patient
suffered with pressure sores.
Why Memory Foam ?
At room temperature it will mould itself to the shape of the body within a few minutes,
contrast this with a normal mattress that is simply flat - no matter how well sprung, it will
never precisely mould to the curves of a human body.
As a result of the foam's "memory" moulding, a memory foam mattress will automatically
adjust itself to your personal shape. In addition your weight will be distributed evenly across
the whole mattress, thus avoiding painful pressure in one particular spot. (If you are
suffering from a medical condition, always consult your doctor.)
In effect, memory foam does away with the need to compromise between a soft,
comfortable mattress and a hard, supportive one. Distributing your weight across the whole
surface it gives support without becoming unpleasantly firm.
Memory foam mattresses or toppers are often recommended by physicians for people
suffering from back pain. However you don't need to have a problem to benefit - many 
people like them simply because they are more comfortable to sleep on.
