Title of individual plate: Processions of Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra [Monju and Fugen in Japanese Buddhism]
Plate number: V
From:
The Thousand Buddhas. Ancient Buddhist Paintings from the Cave-Temples of Tun-Huang on the Western Frontier of China Recovered and Described by Aurel Stein... with an Introductory Essay by Laurence Binyon (London: Oxford University Press for Bernard Quaritch, 1921)
Dimensions: 635 x 515mm
Medium:
Three-colour plate

A fine rare and original  plate from the rare, large folio size work, The Thousand Buddhas by Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943), published London 1921.

It took many years for Stein to secure funding for this lavish publication. The India Office finally agreed to sanction the outlay with the proviso that costs should not exceed UK £1900 – an enormous amount of money at the time.

The introductory text states that 'The paintings and drawings here reproduced are a selection from the mass of precious material discovered by Sir Aurel Stein, and brought away by him from "The Caves of the Thousand Buddhas" at Tun-huang".

Also known as Dunhuang, this oasis city on the Silk Road was where in 1900 Aurel Stein made his most important find in a sealed cave. He discovered an extraordinary cache of drawings and paintings preserved in the desert climate since the eleventh century. Stein induced the Daoist monk in charge of the project to let him have a large selection of scrolls, on which the illustrations in this work were based.
