MALTA AT WAR (Magazine Issue 56) Fully Illustrated throughout with drammatic photographs... many previously unpublished from Private Collections. This issue contains:
Malta 1942 … the most heavily bombed place on earth, a fighter pilot’s paradise! Exclusive photographs and gripping narrative
Between 1939 and 1943, Malta was to witness the greatest aerial siege of World War Two. 1,600 civilians killed and 3,800 injured. 5,700 servicemen were killed and injured in her defence. Over 30,000 buildings destroyed or damaged. Over 3,000 aircraft destroyed or damaged on both sides and naval losses exceeded 100 warships and merchant ships. There were 3,340 alerts with 26,000 sorties by enemy aircraft. The Maltese suffered hunger and illness. Many lost their earthly possessions, yet their morale and determination proved unbreakable. Supplies continued to arrive by heroic feats, and despite the fact that surrounding Europe and North Africa had fallen to the Axis, the Islands stood alone not only offering a resistance to the end, but turned to the offensive, cutting Axis supplies to troops in Africa, in an effort that was to change the outcome of the war. The invasion of Sicily and the surrender of Italy and the Italian fleet in Malta were the first steps towards the defeat of the Axis. Truly a work of much devotion to the subject with in depth knowledge. A masterpiece. |
