Maine Packet Boat Sebasco Small Point 1911 Article
Motor Packet Boat Sebasco Gundv's Harbor

"Every year the fleet of little two-masted coasting schooners plying along the New England coast grows smaller and smaller. These old hookers have almost from time immemorial supported their owners and captains, the latter generally being the owner, carrying freight of all descriptions between Maine ports and New York, Boston, Portland and intermediary ports. There is a reason for the decline of this type of vessel and the accompanying illustration shows the reason. In brief, the motor freighter or packet has driven the sailing coaster out of business. The Sebasco is one of the latest motor packets to make its appearance in Maine waters. She was built for and is owned by Captain J.D. Eastman, of Sebasco, and is in use as a regular freight and passenger carrier between Portland, Gundv's Harbor, Sebasco and Small Point. The Sebasco is 47 feet long, 10 feet 6 inches beam, and equipped with a four cylinder Casco motor, which drives her better than 9 miles an hour. As the engine takes up comparatively small space the Sebasco has big carrying capacity. Not dependent on wind or tide conditions she can make two or three trips to the one of the sailing packet, and, with one or two other motor packets of similar type, monopolizes the business of her route."
