This is a very good jug, produced in Devon by the Aller Vale pottery. This piece of motto ware features the decorated designs usually found on older pieces, whereas most modern pieces feature cottages. The motto on this piece reads "Give Every Man Thy Ear, But Few Thy Tongue". The jug stands 4 3/4" high and has a maximum diameter of 3 1/2", plus the handle. Apart from a very small "nick" 1 1/2" to the left of the pouring lip the jug is in excellent condition. These small "nicks" are quite typical of this type of pottery. The makers marks are clearly seen on the base.
