An extremely nice, 9 Carat Solid Gold Gentleman's Elgin Hunter Cased Pocket Watch in excellent condition and in good working order. Full English hallmarks for Birmingham 1927.
Case:
The 9K Solid Gold Watch Case is in immaculate condition. The inside of the rear cover is hallmarked with the anchor Birmingham town mark, "9" and ".375" for 9 carat solid gold, the maker's mark "ALD" for A L Dennison and the date letter "C" for 1927/28. The inner cuvette also stamped "Dennison Watch Case Co Ltd" and "Special". There are mono engraved initials to the front cover, very nicely done (see photo)
Aaron Lufkin Dennison began his career as an apprentice to James Cary before starting work as a watchmaker in Boston in 1833. In 1849 he partnered Edward Howard to manufacture interchangeable movement parts thus increasing the quality and lowering the price of watches. The factory they started became the Waltham Watch Company. Later he moved to England and started a very successful watch case company - the Dennison Watch Case Company, supplying watch cases to a number of makers including Waltham.
Movement:
The good quality, 7 Jewel, American Elgin movement is in excellent condition and working order. It is signed "Elgin Nat'l Watch Co, USA" and has the serial number 30,842058. A good quality movement. It is is stem wind and set.
Dial:
The white enamel dial is is in excellent, near perfect condition, I cannot fault it (see photo). It has the hours in Roman numerals and a sub seconds dial at six o'clock. It is signed "Elgin" to the centre and "Made in USA" above the sub secs dial. There is a lovely set of blued steel original hands.
Dimensions:
The watch measures approximately 49 mm in diameter, measured across the case (excluding the crown).
Overall Summary:
A very nice 9K Gold Waltham Pocket Watch, in excellent condition, a lovely addition to any collection.
