This Minolta Dynax 404si 35mm SLR camera (sold in some countries as the Maxxum STsi) takes the same interchangeable lenses as the rest of the Minolta AF range, and shares a basic lens mount with the Konica Minolta and Sony DSLRs (see below). It's in excellent condition and boxed (the box is a little tatty - see below), supplied with a Minolta AF D 28-80mm zoom lens, lens caps, instructions and strap, plus batteries.

It's very simple to use, with fully automatic (program) exposure, plus five special subject-based modes; portraits, landscapes, close-ups, sports and night scenes. Plus you have the option of shutter priority auto (ideal for action), aperture priority auto (choose an aperture for depth of field) or metered manual for ultimate control. There's a P (Panic!) button which instantly resets everything to fully auto at any time.

Eight segment metering system, and spot metering with auto exposure lock for accurate exposures with tricky subjects . You can set exposure compensation of up to +/- 3 stops to correct for difficult lighting conditions. Film speeds are set automatically with DX coded films, from ISO 25 to 5000, and you can override this or set film speeds manually for non-DX coded films from ISO 6 to 6400. Auto exposure bracketing takes three pictures automatically, at correct, under 0.5 stops and over 0.5 stops - ideal for ensuring correct exposure with slide film, especially in unusual lighting conditions.

Automatic or manual focusing with Minolta AF and independent Minolta AF fit lenses. Focus lock with first pressure on the shutter release, so you can easily and quickly focus on off-centre subjects. Built in AF illuminator assists focusing in low light as required. The viewfinder has a comprehensive LCD information display including shutter speeds, apertures, exposure compensation and correct manual exposure indicators, in-focus, spot/AE lock and flash ready symbols. The top plate has a large LCD with exposure, mode and status information.

Shutter speeds run from 30 seconds to a fast 1/2000th, plus B for time exposures. Flash sync at up to 1/90th. Shoe for external Minolta flash guns (not included, but check our eBay Shop). WL setting for Wireless flash with suitable Minolta flash units. Slow sync works in A and P modes to balance flash for the foreground and natural light for the background, even with night scenes. Motor driven film loading, wind-on (single or continuous modes, up to 1 frame per second) and rewind, plus cancellable self timer. Multiple exposure mode available for special effects. Socket for Minolta RC-1000S and RC-1000L electrical remote control leads (not included).

Built in flash activates automatically when needed (if raised), or can be switched on or off manually. It covers lenses as wide as 28mm. TTL auto flash metering for the most accurate flash exposures possible. Can be used for auto fill in flash in daylight. Redeye reduction feature.

Includes Minolta 28-80mm D macro zoom lens
This is an original Minolta AF D zoom lens, suitable for all Minolta 35mm AF SLR cameras including Maxxum and Dynax models, plus Konica Minolta and Sony Alpha digital SLRs (see below). This focal length range is excellent for general use, covering everything from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 70mm and 80mm short telephoto/portrait, plus of course all the settings in between. It's the ideal range to keep on your camera, suitable for a huge range of subjects. Angle of view 75 to 30 degrees (on film cameras). The zoom ring is large and has a rubber grip for easy handling.

Focusing is automatic or manual down to 0.4m (16 inches) at all focal lengths, for a macro reproduction ratio of around 1:4 (one quarter life size) at 80mm. This means you can fill the frame with a subject of around 96x120mm (4x6 inches) on film, and even smaller on digital. The focusing ring is slim, but has a knurled grip and is easy to use on manual, though the controls have the usual Minolta AF high gearing. Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and metering modes (see below) including ADI modes which require D lenses. Maximum aperture is f/3.5-5.6, and the lens stops down to f/22-38 for maximum depth of field.

Multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare against the light, and increased contrast. Standard 55mm screw thread for filters and other accessories. Optical construction is eight elements in seven groups. The lens is nicely made, compact and lightweight at around 70mm (2.75 inches) long on the camera at its smallest settings, and a mere 190g.

The camera is in fully working order and excellent condition with no dents, dings, deep scratches or other evidence of abuse or damage. There are only some really small signs of use, including minor handling marks and surface scratches here and there - mainly on the base. The viewfinder is bright and clear with only some small specks of dust which can't affect the results. The box is showing signs of age and missing the top flap (it's also for the outfit with 35-80mm lens), but the accessories are in good condition.

The lens is in excellent condition and fully working order. The zoom and manual focus controls operate smoothly, and AF works well. The diaphragm stops down smartly and is free of oil. The glass is very clean with no scratches, misting, fungus or other problems, beyond tiny specks of dust as usual, which won't affect the pictures at all. Cosmetically, there is only the smallest evidence that it's been used, with some small marks around the rear mount where it's been fitted to a camera, etc. The accessories are in good condition.

Overall, this is an excellent camera outfit in great shape!

Minolta AF cameras can use any of the dozens of lenses in the vast Minolta range (not supplied), including ultra wide angles and fisheyes, fast prime wide angle, standard and telephoto lenses, extreme teles and macro lenses, plus an array of zooms, including wide angle, wide-tele and telephoto. Minolta Power Zoom lenses are compatible, but the professional SSM lenses only work with manual focusing, and digital DT lenses are not suitable for 35mm cameras. In addition, most independent manufacturers produce lenses in Minolta AF fitting, including Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, Vivitar and many others. Sony lenses for the Alpha range of DSLRs fit, though the DT types won't cover the full frame.

Older Minolta MC and MD manual focus lenses will not fit, though adapters are available (not included). Other types of lens can be fitted using adapters (not supplied), including M42 screw, T2 (t-mount), Tamron Adaptall and others, with manual focusing and diaphragm operation.

The Minolta AF D 28-80mm lens supplied is compatible with all Minolta AF 35mm, Konica Minolta and Sony Alpha digital SLR cameras, with auto or manual focusing, and all exposure and metering modes.
