Royal Army Dental Corps Cap Badge
This Sale/Auction is for the Cap Badge as worn by the Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC). Formed in 1921 under Army Order 4/21 and the first simple brass badge was the monogram 'ADC' within a laurel wreath, surmounted by a King's Crown. Army Order 167/46 awarded the Corps the Royal title and a new badge became necessary. Recourse was had to mythology and once again the Greeks had a sign for it. A dragon once slew the friends of Cadmus, the son of a King of Phoenicia. Cadmus killed the dragon and sowed its teeth in the ground whereupon armed men sprang forth. The Chinese emblem of dentistry is the dragon and other stories, too, serve to indicate that dragons and dentists have something in common.
Badge: The Queen's Crown atop a laurel wreath, with a dragon with sword in it's teeth in Silver finish in the centre. Beneath a scroll reads 'Ex dentibus ensis' (From the teeth of the sword).
Brand New and unissued anodised/staybrite Cap badge in a Gold and Silver finish, 43mm high, complete with it's slider.
Guaranteed brand new and in mint condition.
Brief Corps History -
The Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC) is a specialist corps in the British Army that provides dental care services to British Army personnel and their families in war and in peace. The Corps are a part of the British Army's Army Medical Services.
The Corps does not carry any battle honours, Regimental Colour or Queen's Colour.
Currently, the Corps maintains alliances with the Dental Branch of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps and the Royal New Zealand Dental Corps.
History
While army regimental surgeons had been providing dental care services to soldiers since circa 1660, it was not until 1901 that a dental service branch was formerly established under the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). In 1921, dentists of the RAMC were split off into a separate Army Dental Corps (ADC). The Corps was awarded the "Royal" prefix to become the Royal Army Dental Corps in November 1946 in recognition of its service in World War II.
