A SHORT HISTORY -
ORIGINS
The King's Own Royal Border Regiment is the heir and successor of three former Regiments, namely the 4th King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) raised on the 13th July 1680, the 34th Cumberland Regiment, raised in 1702 and the 55th Westmorland Regiment, raised in 1755. The 34th and 55th amalgamated to become The Border Regiment in 1881. On the 1st October 1959, The King's Own Royal Border Regiment came into being, when The King's Own Royal Regiment amalgamated with The Border Regiment at Barnard Castle, North Yorkshire.
EARLY HISTORY
In 1688 when William of Orange landed in Torbay the first regiment to support him was the 4th of Foot. In reward the Regiment was given the unique distinction of wearing the lion of England as its badge. The Regiment won its first battle honour at Namur in 1695 as part of King William's Army. Throughout the war of Spanish Succession the Regiment was employed on service with the fleet and in 1703 became part of the Royal Regiment of Marines.
In 1743 the 34th of Foot were sent to Flanders at the outbreak of the war of Austrian Succession. On 30th April 1745 the Regiment fought a famous rearguard action at Fontenoy for which it was awarded the right to emblazon a laural wreath on its Colours.
In the Peninsular War both the 4th and 34th of Foot served with distinction, the 4th leading the breach of the fortress wall at San Sebastian. On the 28th October 1811 at the battle of Arroyo Dos Molinos the 34th found themselves fighting their French opposite number, the 34eme Regiment de Ligne. In a total victory the French Drums and Drum Major's Mace were captured. The Battle Honour 'Arroyo Dos Molinos' is unique to the Regiment and to this day the original Drums are paraded on the anniversary of the battle. After Napoleon's escape from Elba the 4th of Foot crossed from England to Belgium and, by marching forty eight miles in just over a day were able to take part in the Battle of Waterloo. In 1841 the 55th of Foot played a distinguished part in the Chinese wars, capturing an Imperial Chinese Dragon Standard at Nankin. It was awarded the right to bear the word 'CHINA' and the dragon device on the Colours. Guaranteed new and unissued, in mint condition.
