A little history - Between 1958 and 1960 three East Anglian Regiments were formed. The 1st Battalion was formed by the amalgamation of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, the Suffolk Regiment and the Cambridgeshire Regiment. The 2nd Battalion was formed by the amalgamation of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment and the Northamptonshire Regiment. The 3rd Battalion was formed from the amalgamation of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment and the Essex Regiment.
On the 1st September 1964 the Royal Anglian Regiment became the first Large Regiment of the British Army. It was also on this day that the three East Anglian Regiments became the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment.
The Battalions were nicknamed:
The 1st Battalion 'The Vikings'
The 2nd Battalion 'The Poachers'
The 3rd Battalion 'The Pompadours'
On the 1st September the Royal Leicestershire Regiment became the 4th Battalion 'The Tigers'. The Tigers were disbanded in 1965 with their ancestry being passed onto the 2nd Battalion.
On the 5th October 1992 the Pompadours were amalgamated into the 1st and 2nd Battalions who also took on its links with the counties and former Regiments.
The Regiment or one of its ancestors has taken part in almost every major campaign since the 10th Foot was raised in 1685.
As such, their history goes back over 300 years. They maintain close county connections by recruiting from across the area as well as supporting cadet camps, career offices and many other local organizations and events.
Each battalion had different Collar badges or 'Collar Dog's'. The only one's still in use today are the one's for 1st and 2nd Battalion's of the Royal Anglian Regiment. The 3rd Battalion by virtue of the fact they no longer exist are rarer to obtain.
