Well this is where it all started for Moto-Build Racing over 20 years ago, with the MG Maestro, we wouldn't have expected to be selling one in 2008 with only 29000 miles on it!
Well what about this Maestro then? If you are expecting a showroom fresh rustfree model then I am afraid you may be dissapointed, the car is very straight but there are various rust spots aound it, but in my opinion none of them are life threatening and for the main part can be sanded back to good steel, where the pillars meet the sills for example are all sound with just surface rust.
The interior is excellent, the carpets and seats are unmarked and the headlining is undamaged and I do believe the car has never been smoked in, the cigarette lighter has not been used nor has the ash tray, the original factory radio cassette is still in place and working.
Now the best bit- the mechanics, it is superb, this car really shifts and I was pleasantly surprised and reminded just how good these cars were in their day, and even now with that huge amount of torque it will still embarass most hot hatches! This car has been religiously treated to octane booster with every fuel stop since 4 star became unavailable, the gear shift is ultra precise, the gearbox is perfect, the brakes are fine and all the shocks and bushes must be good because I couldn't resist chucking it around a bit and it handles very well with little roll.
The car has had 2 owners but that was the same family since 1989.
To sum up this a very rare find and could be suitable if you were thinking of re-shelling a turbo, as mentioned earlier it does have some rust but is far from being knackered, so viewing would be a good idea, it is located in Carshalton Surrey, if you were aiming to build it into a race car then it would be perfect, if you just wanted to use it as a road car then you would need to deal with the rust spots before it gets too late, everything seems to work, and with power steering it is easy to drive.
Now I know all you Maestro - Montego fans will be clicking on watch this item, but if the bidding has not reached sensible money with 48 hours to go I will cancel the listing and sell it elsewhere, because as they like to say 'Advertised elsewhere so can withdraw at any time' but I would like it to go in the auction, so the car can go to a deserving home, so don't be shy have a bid. You will be able to drive it home and I am confident you will have no problems, as it has been used regularly all it's life, not just parked up somewhere.
I am happy to answer sensible questions either by email or by phone on 07956451470 just ask for Darryl - yes I am still alive after all this time!
