Somewhat like fishing. There are plenty out there.
You just have to find them. Drag your tow sack around the desert with your strong magnet and when you feel a slight tug, you have probably found an iron meteorite.
The newspaper, on 1-21-08, gives an account of a meteorite selling at auction for $155,350.00. There are many more out there. Hard to find. If they were easy to find, they would not be worth much.
The fun and anticipation is a good part of the hobby.
It is at least as good a sport as fishing. You never know what you will come up with next.
Speaking of fishing. This magnet is a good fishing magnet.
Drill a hole into the bright shiny metal on your magnet, (the backing plate) not the magnet itself.
Go to Loew's and get a length of small cable, and they also have the fittings to clamp the cable.
Put the cable thru the hole in the magnet backing plate that you have just drilled into and you can fish with your magnet and not lose it.
Makes a neat rig.
I also like to put a wooden handle on the end of the cable, so I have something to easily hang onto.
May not catch a whole lot of bass, but drag it behind your boat, out around the fishing piers and bridge pilings, you are liable to find a gun, a knife, or no telling how many fishing lures.
Some of the gentlemen that I have sold magnets to, as a hobby, go out to the fishing piers every morning.
They know that there have been men out there all night long, fishing, drinking beer, and horseplaying. More horseplaying and drinking beer than fishing usually.
Anyway, every morning they go out to the fishing piers to see what they can find. Sometimes they come up with a fresh rod and reel that was just dropped into the water the night before.
If you have a new roof installed on your house, you can drag your magnet around your yard and probably pick up a bucket or two of nails that the roofers left.
If you work on lawnmowers, rototillers, motors, boats, cars, washing machines or some other kind of equipment in your back yard, you will from time to time drop a small part in the grass.
It is almost impossible to find the small part. It hits the grass and bounces no telling where.
Drag your strong magnet around the area and you will more than likely find your small part.
Insurance is optional.
