A large and exceptional pre-Columbian period decorated clay spindle whorl from the early Mayan culture, generally located across the central region of Mexico and into the Yucatan penninsula, dating from the early first millenium AD, more or less. Richly symbolic in nature, spindle whorls such as these were usually made for ritual purposes, as much as for the weaving of threads for cloth, and are often found as part of burial or funerary offerings.
This example is age-worn, but in mostly good condition, finely carved in a stylized anthromorphic representation of a mythical creature perhaps. It is large, about 32 mm or over one inch in diameter and 10 mm in thickness. This is an excellent example of the high art and spiritual aspects of the amazing Mayan culture, before Spanish contact.
