In 1885, Mason Pearson, an engineer, invented a process of brush-making and won a Silver Medal at London’s International Inventions Exhibition. He then patented the rubber “pneumatic” (supported by air) cushioned hairbrush – arguably the most famous feature of a Mason Pearson Hairbrush. Our heads are not flat! And so the cushion allows the brush to conform to the contours of the scalp, to accomplish the 3 primary purposes of hair brushing: 1) to stimulate circulation to the hair follicles, 2) to exfoliate the scalp and remove debris in the hair, and, most importantly, 3) to distribute natural oils throughout. The cushion allows the bristles to reach all parts of the scalp and every hair without irritating the skin. The “spired” (twisted) tufts allow each bristle to come into contact with more hair surface area during every brush stroke, maximizing the effects.
