MARK PODWAL AP LITHOGRAPH JUDAICA DRUGS JEWISH ART RARE

Here's a rare ARTISTS PROOF lithograph signed by the artist Mark Podwal. It depicts an old Jew and a young Jew in a Synagogue, and the Biblical verse in Genesis, "And  will make you a great Nation...And I will Bless thee..". The reference being that the older generation is blessing the younger generation. The kid in the picture doesn't seem too happy,as the old Rabbi seems to be shedding a tear. Perhaps this is because the older generation has failed to pass on the vitality of Judaism to the modern generation and instead the younger generation is involved with a form of "chulent" (gastronomic) Judaism and drugs (the 2 signs seen outside the Synagogue). That's at least my interpretation of this rare litho. signed by the artist.

Mark Podwal (born June 8, 1945) is an artist, author and physician. He may be best known for his drawings on The New York Times OP-ED page. In addition, he is the author and illustrator of books for children as well as for adults. Most of these works — Podwal's own as well as those he has illustrated for others—typically focus on Jewish legend, history and tradition. Exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world, his art is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Fogg Art Museum, the Jewish Museum in Prague, and the Library of Congress.
